Responsive by Design: Integrating Cultural Responsiveness into Behavioral Health Care

About this live event

Providing culturally responsive care requires more than awareness. It requires intentionally integrating culture, identity, and context into every stage of clinical practice. This workshop explores how clinicians can intentionally integrate culture, identity, and context into everyday clinical work while moving beyond cultural competence toward a more reflective and adaptable approach to care. Participants will examine how culture influences assessment, case conceptualization, treatment planning, and therapeutic engagement while practicing strategies for responding thoughtfully to clients' diverse lived experiences. Through discussion and clinical application, participants will strengthen their ability to translate equity into meaningful clinical action that promotes more responsive, effective, and person-centered behavioral health services. This workshop satisfies Illinois required Cultural Competency Training (20 ILCS 2105/2105-370) for licensed health care professionals licensed or registered by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Learning Objectives

  • Define key concepts related to cultural responsiveness and explain their relevance to equitable behavioral health care.
  • Identify opportunities to incorporate culture, identity, and context into assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning.
  • Evaluate clinical scenarios and identify opportunities to strengthen culturally responsive interventions and therapeutic engagement.

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, and MFT's.

Live event Instructor(s)

  • Taylor Pettway Grayer, LMFT

    Taylor Ariel Pettway is the Executive Director of the Phoenix Clinic Chicago and a marriage and family therapist in private practice at the Chicago Center for Relationship Counseling. She has previously served as a diversity and inclusion consultant in the Child Welfare department at JCFS Chicago and is currently researching the impact of intergenerational trauma on African American couples and families, having been published in 2018 in the Encyclopedia for Couple and Family Therapy.

    Taylor holds her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Creative Writing from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia as well as her Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Uniquely, Taylor is also certified by the Alabama Department of Education in Secondary English Language Arts Education, grades six through 12 and seeks to utilize her unique set of skills, nestled in between teaching and therapy, in service of the world.

    Through the lens of self-awareness and narrative telling, Taylor promotes the healing of diverse populations, such as children from infancy to 18, unmarried and married couples, co-parents, single-parent families, foster and adoptive children and families, and other extended families struggling through a myriad of life transitions. Specifically, her areas of clinical focus include parenting and family sculpting with blended and single-parent families, communities of color, intergenerational trauma, systemic racism and oppression, mindfulness body practices, relational conflict, and men and women’s issues.

If you have a different licensure or are licensed outside of Illinois please check with your licensure body before purchasing and attending our workshops. IDFPR's Marriage and Family Therapy Continuing Education Sponsor Requirements: It is the responsibility of the sponsor to provide each participant in an approved program with a certificate of participation or attendance for each successfully completed course or program.
